Vis Island is situated in the central Dalmatian archipelago with an area of 90.3 sq km (length 17 km, width up to 8 km) and population of 4,338.
Until 1989, due to the presence of a Yugoslav naval base, foreigners were forbidden to come on the island. For this reason, Vis was spared much of the comercializam that other islands had in the height of tourism in the 70s and 80s. It is now a main tourist destination and gives visitors insight of how people once lived on the Dalmatian islands.
There are two main settlements: Vis Town and Komiža.
The town and the port of Vis lies on the northern coast of the island with many cliffs, of which Gradac Cliff is most impressive (100 m). The islets of Ravnik, Budihovac, Parzanj and Greben are situated off the south-eastern shore. The vast Komiza Bay, with sandy bottom, is situated on the western coast of the island. The island is exposed to the north-westerly and south-easterly winds. The average air temperature in July is 24 °C, and in January 8.8 °C; the annual rainfall reaches 557 mm (only around 40 mm in the summer). The island has no fresh water sources, apart from several springs near Komiza. Water is supplied in the summer by ships and kept in cisterns. Limestone crests used to be covered with macchia. Fertile valleys, covered with red soils and interspersed with sand dunes, are cultivated with vines. |

The town of Vis is located in the north-eastern part of the island Vis in the bottom of a well protected bay. It was developed from the former settlements Kut and Luka, which became one entity in the 16th century by the building of the church Gospa od Spilica.
Tourism on Vis began to develop significantly with the demilitarization of the island at the beginning of 1991, during Croatia’s independence. So, it has been only approximately two decades that the island and town opened for touism.
The town offers various sports activities. There is well equipped sport and recreation center with four tennis courts, a basketball and a football ground. You also have a sailing, a cricket, and a paragliding club in Vis. There are also two diving centers, or you may wish to go mountain climbing and biking.
During the year there, Vis organizes several interesting events: the carnival and the International Festival of amateur Theatre in May, the Cultural Summer of Vis with concerts and theatre during the summer months, and a sailing regatta in October.

Komiza is located in a deep bay on the western side of the island Vis below the 600 meter high mountain Hum. It is a typical Mediterranean village, which attracts the tourists with beautiful beaches and with narrow roads and houses squeezed together around the harbour. Thanks to the mild Mediterranean climate, the stay in Komiza is pleasant also in the winter months. There are gravel beaches along the whole east coast of the Bay of Komiza.
Active holiday enthusiasts can choose between parasailing, riding, and diving. There are 20 dive locations in the sea depths surrounding Vis, which include sunken planes, sailing ships, submarines, and war ships. Komiza has a fisherman’s museum and the town also organizes entertainment events during the summer with live traditional music.
